Welcome to the third post in the Legacy as a Father series, part of the "Legacy of Men" blog. This four-part series, released every Wednesday at 10 AM CDT, explores how fathers and male role models shape children’s lives through intentional guidance and presence. Today, we focus on the role of a community mentor—how men can influence nieces, nephews, or community youth by offering the leadership and support they may have longed for in their own lives. Through presence and guidance, men can leave a lasting legacy that empowers young people beyond their immediate family. This post shares a story of mentorship, offers practical strategies for impacting community youth, and invites readers to reflect on their own contributions.

The Power of a Community Mentor
Mentorship is a profound way for men to extend their influence, acting as trusted guides who provide wisdom, encouragement, and stability to children beyond their own. Whether it’s a niece navigating school pressures, a nephew seeking confidence, or a community youth looking for direction, a mentor’s presence can fill gaps left by circumstance or absence. Many men reflect on their own youth, wishing they had a steady figure to guide them through challenges. By becoming that figure for others, men can offer the leadership they once needed, fostering resilience and self-worth in young people. This act of mentorship not only shapes individual lives but also builds stronger communities, creating a legacy of empowerment.

A Mentor’s Guidance in Action
As a corporate leader, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring many young employees, most of them teenagers starting their first jobs. One stood out: Mark, a wide-eyed teen who battled with self-value and confidence. Recognizing a need for the steady guidance I craved in my own youth, I made it a point to check in regularly with him as with all my employees, offering encouragement and a listening ear. Early on, I shared a lesson that transformed my perspective about life in general: the most important question in life is “Why.” While we often know the how, what, and where, it’s the “Why” that unlocks purpose and drives success. Over time, Mark embraced this mindset, asking “Why” to understand his goals and challenges. Watching him grow from a hesitant teenager into a confident buyer for a Fortune 50 company by age 25 was a blessing. His journey showed me that mentorship, rooted in presence and intentional guidance, can provide the leadership young people need to thrive.

Why Community Mentorship Matters
Children outside your immediate family—nieces, nephews, or community youth—often face challenges without consistent guidance. A mentor’s presence at their events, like a school play or a sports match, shows them they are valued. Offering advice during tough moments or modeling perseverance can inspire them to believe in their potential. For many men, becoming a mentor is a chance to provide the support they wished for in their own youth, addressing gaps in leadership they experienced. This role strengthens not just the child but the entire community, as mentored youth grow into confident, capable adults. By stepping into this role, men create a legacy that extends far beyond their household.

Practical Ways to Be a Community Mentor
Being a community mentor requires intentionality and a commitment to showing up for children who look up to you. Here are practical strategies to make a meaningful impact:
Be Present at Key Moments: Attend events important to the child, such as a niece’s recital or a community youth’s game. Your presence signals they are worth your time.
Listen Actively: Ask open-ended questions like, “What’s been tough for you lately?” and listen without judgment to build trust and show you care.
Share Your Story: Reflect on challenges you faced as a youth and share how you overcame them. This helps children see that setbacks are universal and surmountable.
Model Leadership: Demonstrate qualities you wished for in a mentor, such as patience, accountability, or resilience, in your interactions with the child.
Engage in Community Programs: Volunteer as a coach, tutor, or mentor in local organizations, like youth clubs or after-school programs, to connect with children in need of guidance.

The Legacy of Mentorship
The legacy of a community mentor lies in the lives transformed through guidance and presence. By offering the leadership you once needed, you empower children to navigate their challenges with confidence and purpose. My experience with Mark showed me that mentorship can fill a void, just as I wished for in my youth, creating a ripple effect that strengthens families and communities. For every man reading this, your role as a mentor is a chance to leave a lasting mark, shaping the next generation with the wisdom and support you value.
